Item #503RG $12

Gold & Garnets
$10 ---currently out of stock---

Tiny rough, red gemstones will emerge when the surrounding soil is washed off through sifting and sorting.

Garnet is the birth stone for January. The most common colors of garnet are red and dark red. In the past, thin slices of garnet have been used in church and temple windows. It has been told that Noah suspended garnet in the ark in order to disperse light for the 40 days. Garnet has also been carried by travelers for protection.

Garnet is widely distributed, especially in the vicinity of granite contacts. It is usually found in small rounded grains of red to purplish color. The largest quantity recorded was from the black sands at Rough and Ready, California, at 446 pounds to the ton.

The name garnet comes from the Roman word "granatus" that meaning seed, as the gems were thought to resemble small red pomegranate seeds.
